Research Priorities

Bold Questions. Youth-Centered Methods. Equitable Solutions.

KFD’s research agenda isn’t just about generating data—it’s about reshaping who holds knowledge, how it’s used, and who it benefits. We champion community-partnered, equity-rooted research with youth at the center—fueling breakthroughs that change systems, not just symptoms.

🔍 Our Priority Areas

Non-Invasive Glucose Monitoring

We support early-stage development and validation of optical, biosensing, and wearable-based glucose monitoring. Projects focus on accessibility, comfort, and real-world usability.

School-Based Detection and Access Models

From in-school screening pilots to telehealth triage innovations, we study scalable interventions for early diagnosis and care in underserved youth populations.

Mental Health & Diabetes Distress in Youth

We examine the intersections of identity, stigma, stress, and chronic illness—co-designing interventions with young people navigating adolescence with T1D.

Technology Equity & mHealth Engagement

We explore how different communities access, interpret, and trust digital tools—including apps, CGMs, and remote monitoring—through both qualitative and quantitative studies.

Health Disparities & Structural Barriers

Our mixed-methods research unpacks inequities in diagnosis, treatment, and innovation adoption, especially across racial, geographic, and economic lines.

Participatory Policy & Youth Advocacy

We measure the ripple effects of grassroots campaigns, legislative wins, and community leadership on access, coverage, and rights protections.

Youth-Led & Youth-Informed

All research we support:

  • Embeds youth as peer researchers, community liaisons, or reviewers
  • Prioritizes open access publication and clear communication
  • Reflects ethical, culturally grounded design

Our Youth Research Fellows receive mentorship, IRB training, and stipends to co-create studies that matter to their peers.

🧠 Sample Projects

  • A youth-led survey on tech trust and burnout among BIPOC teens with T1D
  • A multi-site pilot of in-school screening + referral for undiagnosed T1D in rural communities
  • Narrative-based mental health interventions for recently diagnosed teens
  • Impact analysis of state-level insulin cost cap legislation
